Is it obligatory for a father to disclose his son's moral or religious shortcomings to the prospective bride?
Informing someone who is unaware of a suitor's condition about his true state when he proposes is a requirement of sincere advice (naseeha) to a Muslim. Some scholars have explicitly stated the obligation to reveal the suitor's flaws without being asked for consultation, as narrated from Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he described his brother to a suitor as "a man of bad character and religion." It is also necessary to continually advise the son to strive to overcome severe anger and to cultivate good manners, and to advise the other son to maintain his prayers, stay away from bad companions, and associate with the righteous. Furthermore, one should frequently supplicate for both of them, for the supplication of a parent for their child is answered.
