What are the statues mentioned in the verse, what did David (peace be upon him) do with them, and was it permissible to make statues in his law?

The statues mentioned in the Quran belonged to the Prophet Solomon, images made of copper and glass. They might have been of predatory animals and birds, or of angels, prophets, and righteous people in mosques to increase devotion. These were permissible in their law, but that was abrogated by the law of Muhammad (peace be upon him), and they were forbidden for fear that they might eventually be worshipped over time.
