What is the minimum duration for I'tikaf?

Scholars have differed regarding the minimum duration for I'tikaf (seclusion in a mosque for worship). The majority of them hold that there is no specific duration legislated (by the Shari'ah), but rather any duration that is عرفًا (customarily) considered "I'tikaf" is sufficient, even if it is an hour. The Malikis, on the other hand, maintain that the minimum duration for I'tikaf is one day and one night. The fatwa (religious edict) has favored the opinion of the majority due to the absence of evidence specifying a particular duration.
