Is it permissible to sever ties of kinship with a maternal cousin if the mother asks for it?

The status of a mother is great, and she must be honored. However, obedience to her is not absolute in matters involving disobedience to Allah. Therefore, obedience to her is not obligatory in severing ties with the maternal aunt, because she is a kin (womb-relative), and severing ties with her is a major sin. As for the maternal cousin (daughter of the maternal uncle), the preponderant opinion is that she is not among the kin (womb-relatives) with whom ties must be maintained. However, if the mother forbids maintaining ties with her without a legitimate religious justification, then obedience to her is not obligatory. It is permissible to maintain ties with relatives without the mother's knowledge, and efforts should be made to reconcile the mother and her sister.
