Is a wealthy woman obligated to support her brother who is unable to earn a living?
If a man is ill or unable to earn a living and has no money, his maintenance is obligatory upon his ascendants and descendants. If he has no ascendants or descendants, or if they are in financial hardship, then his maintenance is obligatory upon whoever inherits from him. The more preponderant opinion is that it is not a condition that there be no one who could exclude her from inheritance if the one who could exclude her is in financial hardship. Therefore, if the man has no one but this sister, then his maintenance becomes obligatory upon her, unless there is someone who would exclude her from inheritance, or if the one who would exclude her is in financial hardship.
