What is the ruling on eating the known porcupine?

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on eating the hedgehog. The sounder of the two opinions is that it is permissible, because the basic principle concerning animals is permissibility, and there is no legal text that prohibits it. It feeds on plants and is not among the predatory animals with fangs. Ibn 'Umar was asked about the hedgehog and he recited the verse: (Say, "I find not in that which has been revealed to me anything forbidden to one who eats it, unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled forth or the flesh of swine"). The hadith narrated from Abu Hurayrah concerning its prohibition was weakened by Al-Bayhaqi and others due to the unknown identity of the shaykh who narrated it.
