Is it permissible for a young man to marry a Ja'fari Shi'ite girl with a bad family reputation? What is the ruling of this marriage in Sharia? What is the Sharia position regarding his disapproving family? Is it permissible to attend the wedding if he insists on it?

Islam does not approve of relationships between a man and a non-mahram woman outside of marriage. Mixing between genders has caused familial problems. A Sunni Muslim should not marry a Shia woman due to the differences that may affect the family and the upbringing of children, unless she is close to the Sunnis and not fanatical about her madhhab, and can be convinced to follow the Sunni madhhab. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: "It is not befitting for a Muslim to marry his ward to a Rafidhi, and even if he himself marries a Rafidhi woman, the marriage is valid if he hopes she will repent, otherwise, refraining from marrying her is better so that she does not corrupt his child." The belief in preferring Ali over the Companions does not fall outside of innovation (bid'ah) and misguidance. A man does not need a wali (guardian) for marriage, but it is not recommended to avoid cutting ties with relatives. Marriage between different nationalities is not recommended to avoid problems resulting from different customs and the family being affected by political relations.
