Is it permissible for an adult girl to marry herself to a Muslim and Arab young man for whom she holds mutual feelings, despite her family's objection, especially since she has been humiliated because of this objection, and the young man is of good character and her maternal uncle has inquired about him, and some of her brothers and sisters approve of this marriage?

It is not permissible for a woman to marry herself, because marriage without a guardian (wali) is invalid according to the majority of scholars. The guardian does not have the right to prevent his ward from marrying a suitable match. If he does so, he is considered to be preventing her marriage (ʿāḍil). In this case, the woman has the right to refer the matter to a judge to marry her off or to order her guardian to do so. Alternatively, the more distant guardian may marry her off if the closer guardian prevents her marriage.
