What should be done about drinking water or eating at the time of the Fajr adhan, and what is the duty towards one's family after becoming aware of a fatwa that differs from the one previously adopted?

The Hadith, "If one of you hears the call [to prayer] while a vessel is in his hand, let him not put it down until he has satisfied his need from it," is understood to refer to the first Adhan (the Adhan for Fajr before true dawn) or to a state of doubt regarding the arrival of Fajr. This interpretation reconciles the various proofs and the clear Quranic texts that prohibit eating and drinking after the dawn becomes manifest.

For one who ate and drank after the dawn became manifest, being ignorant of the ruling or having an incorrect interpretation, there is no sin upon him, and it is hoped that he will not be required to make up the fast. This is because there is no accountability for ignorance or incorrect interpretation, just as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not command Adi ibn Hatim, may Allah be pleased with him, to make up his fast when he ate due to an incorrect interpretation. Religious obligations do not become binding upon an individual until the message has reached them.
