The answer

The people of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era of ignorance) used many greetings, such as: "May you live long this morning," "May your morning be pleasant," "Be safe," and "Live a thousand years." Allah replaced these with a greeting better than them, which is the greeting of their father Adam, peace be upon him. Allah Almighty said to Adam when He created him: "Go and greet those angels who are sitting and listen to what they greet you with, for it will be your greeting and the greeting of your offspring." So Adam greeted them, saying: "Peace be upon you (As-salamu alaykum)," and they replied: "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah (As-salamu alayka wa rahmatullah)."
