Backbiting is one of the prohibited acts, unless it serves a legitimate purpose. Scholars have summarized the legitimate purposes for which backbiting is permissible into six reasons: seeking justice (ظلامة), seeking help to change an evil (منكر), seeking a fatwa (definition) (استفتاء), warning Muslims against evil, when someone openly commits sin or innovation (بدعة), and for identification (تعريف). Therefore, it is not permissible to mention the faults of a divorced woman to her suitor or his family due to the absence of a legitimate purpose. However, it is permissible for someone who consults you about marrying her to mention what is usually disliked in women like her, provided that it is influential and the intention is sincere advice, not defamation.
