What is the ruling on and how is the expiation performed for a husband who intentionally had intercourse with his wife during the daytime in Ramadan while she was coerced, given that fasting would cause hardship for the husband and the wife is pregnant and unable to fast?

Sexual intercourse with one's wife during the daytime in Ramadan is forbidden by Islamic law. Whoever commits this act must repent and seek forgiveness from Allah. They are also obligated to perform expiation (kaffarah) and make up the missed fast (qada').

A wife who is forced into intercourse is not required to perform expiation or make up the fast, nor does she incur any sin. However, if she willingly cooperates with her husband, she incurs sin and must make up the fast. The preponderant opinion is that she is not required to perform expiation.

Expiation is incumbent upon the husband, and it is not permissible to switch from fasting to feeding if he is capable of fasting. Embarrassment from family and friends is not a valid legal excuse.
