Is he who curses the Companions to be considered an infidel, even if he curses only one of them, especially those who disparage Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan and Amr ibn al-'As, may Allah be pleased with them both?

Insulting the Companions is a grave evil, especially the Rightly Guided Caliphs and the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Scholars have emphasized this, with some considering anyone who insults Abu Bakr to be an apostate, and others believing that anyone who insults the Rightly Guided Caliphs and Aisha is not upon Islam. As for insulting Mu'awiyah and 'Amr ibn al-'As, it is an act of disobedience and a "hidden evil." Cursing the Companions warrants a severe punishment according to the consensus of the Imams, and it may even lead to execution. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade insulting his Companions, and he likened cursing a believer to killing him. As for insulting Mu'awiyah, it is a sin and an evil deed, for he was a trustworthy scribe of revelation and a caliph. What transpired between him and Ali was a matter of ijtihad (independent reasoning), and Mu'awiyah was a caliph by the indication of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
