Who are the kinship (Arham) whose ties must be maintained, and are they from the father's side, the mother's side, or the wife's side?

Scholars have differed on defining the relatives (Arham) whose ties must be maintained, holding three opinions. The most preponderant opinion is that they are blood relatives from both the paternal and maternal sides, whether they are heirs or not. As for the wife's relatives, they are not considered arham to the husband, and the husband's relatives are not considered arham to the wife. Maintaining kinship ties (silat al-rahim) can take various forms, such as visiting, giving charity, being kind to them, visiting the sick, enjoining them to good and forbidding them from evil, and other acts that are customarily accepted.
