What is the ruling on listening to music accompanying news, programs, and comedy films, without paying attention or intending to listen to it?

The statement that there is no harm in watching comedic films accompanied by music, based on the distinction between sama' (hearing) and istima' (listening), is incorrect. This is because frequent sama' can lead to unlawful istima'. Islamic law came to block the means (to evil), and music is an abomination that must be removed. One who hears it and claims not to be listening to it has not changed the evil. Comedic films often contain forbidden elements such as unveiled women, lies, and mockery. Furthermore, excessive laughter deadens the heart, and it is not befitting for a Muslim to be preoccupied with such things while the Ummah faces dire calamities.
