Is a sofa purified by wiping the spot of vomit with a water-dampened cloth three times?

If the sofa absorbs impurity, merely wiping it is not sufficient; rather, it must be washed with water until the impurity is removed.

If the sofa is smooth and does not absorb impurity, it is preferable to wash it with water to avoid scholarly disagreement. Some scholars say it is only purified by washing (like the Shafi'is and the sound opinion of the Hanbalis), while others say it is purified by wiping (like the Malikis and Hanafis, and one of two narrations from Ahmad, chosen by Ibn Taymiyyah), with the Malikis and Hanafis providing details regarding the conditions for wiping. Avoiding disagreement by washing a smooth, impure item is more appropriate.
