What is the ruling on revealing the names of women, and what is the evidence for its prohibition?

It is neither forbidden nor an innovation to reveal the name of one's mother or other women. Rather, it is a custom that many people have adopted out of modesty. The Quran mentioned Mary by her name, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned Safiyyah by her name, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned Sawdah by her name. Historians and Hadith scholars have consistently mentioned the names of women in their books. Therefore, there is no harm in mentioning the mother's name or refraining from doing so, as the matter is customary, not شرعية (based on religious law).
