Is it permissible to eat from or benefit from the money of a person whose source is doubtful, knowing that refusing to take from it may lead to cutting ties or affecting his wife?

If one is certain that a person's entire wealth is illicit, then it is not permissible to accept their gift or eat their food. However, if their wealth is mixed between lawful and unlawful, it is disliked (makrooh) to do so. This dislike is lifted out of necessity, such as to avoid severing ties of kinship.

If the judgment regarding their wealth is based on doubt, the default is soundness and blamelessness. If it is known that the wealth is stolen or usurped, it is not permissible to take it. But if its status is unknown, the default is that it belongs to its owner.

A Muslim's circumstances are presumed to be sound, with no suspicion in their dealings, and it is not permissible to accuse them without clear evidence.
