What is the ruling on one who learns some types of sorcery but does not practice it?

Scholars have agreed on the prohibition of learning and teaching magic, but they have differed on whether the practitioner is considered a disbeliever:

- Hanafi school: The magician is considered a disbeliever if he believes that jinn perform whatever he wishes for him. He is not considered a disbeliever if he believes it is mere illusion. - Shafi'i school: The magician is considered a disbeliever if he believes in something that necessitates disbelief (such as seeking closeness to planets and believing in their agency) or if he believes magic is permissible. He is considered a fasiq (transgressor) if he does not hold such beliefs. - Hanbali and Maliki schools: The magician is considered a disbeliever simply by learning and practicing magic, whether he believes it to be forbidden or permissible.
