What is the ruling on working in a hospital in America if it conflicts with attending the Friday prayer?
The free, accountable Muslim male must answer the call on Friday and hasten to the Friday prayer, for Allah Almighty says: (O you who have believed, when [the ] is called for the prayer on Friday, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade) and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: (Either people will stop neglecting the Friday prayers, or Allah will seal their hearts, and they will then be among the heedless). It is permissible to be absent from the Friday prayer in cases of necessity, such as a doctor working in emergencies and admitting critical cases if no alternative is available, in which case the Dhuhr prayer is performed. However, if remaining is not necessary due to the presence of someone else who can perform the work, then there is no excuse for abandoning the Friday prayer.
