Breaking the fast with fresh dates (rutab), dry dates (tamr), or water is a recommended , not an obligation. Therefore, one may break the fast with whatever good things they desire. It is authentically reported from Anas that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to break his fast with fresh dates before praying. If there were no fresh dates, then with dry dates. If there were no dry dates, then with sips of water.
Thus, your action, O questioner, contradicts the Sunnah in the manner of breaking the fast. Your fast is valid, but you have sinned by smoking, for smoking is forbidden.
