The preponderant view is that the sacrificed son was Ishmael, peace be upon him. This is supported by Surat As-Saffat, which first gave glad tidings to Ibrahim of a forbearing boy, then mentioned the story of the sacrifice, and then gave glad tidings of Isaac afterwards. This indicates that the first glad tiding was concerning Ishmael. Furthermore, the Torah mentions "his only son and his firstborn," which refers to Ishmael, whereas Isaac was the second son. The incident of the sacrifice took place in Mecca, which Ibrahim and Ishmael built, while Isaac was in Ash-Sham. Additionally, the angels gave glad tidings to Sarah of Isaac and, after him, Jacob. How then could Ibrahim be commanded to sacrifice him while he was young, knowing that he would live to father Jacob? Everyone who claims it was Isaac has taken this view from the Jews.
