Is a young man, whose desires are aroused and who fears for his religious commitment from mixing with people, excused for abandoning mixing in order to preserve his religion?

It is advisable to initiate marriage if it is feasible, as it helps in lowering the gaze and preserving one's chastity. One must be careful not to be in seclusion with women with whom seclusion is forbidden, or with young men (murdān) from whom temptation is feared. It is also necessary to commit to lowering the gaze. Furthermore, it is recommended to frequently perform voluntary acts of worship such as fasting, remembrance of Allah (dhikr), and recitation of the Quran. Reading books on encouragement and discouragement (targhīb wa tarhīb) and those on softening the heart (raqā'iq) is also advised, due to their effect in suppressing the soul's forbidden desires. One must seek good companionship that aids in righteousness, sit with scholars and virtuous people, and avoid idleness.
