Has any scholar interpreted the Almighty's saying: (It may be that Allah will ordain love between you and those of them with whom you have been at enmity) to mean something other than the conversion of Abu Sufyan to Islam, and is this interpretation considered valid?

Some scholars have stated that the verse was revealed concerning Abu Sufyan, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married his daughter Umm Habiba, and this constituted affection. Ibn Atiyyah refuted this opinion, stating that the marriage to Umm Habiba occurred before the revelation of this verse. Others mentioned that the verse includes Abu Sufyan and others who embraced Islam after the conquest of Mecca, as all of Quraish embraced Islam and their Islam became good, and affection arose between them and those who preceded them in Islam. Thus, the intended affection is their Islam and their agreement in religion.
