Will a person be held accountable for the sins he committed before he became insane?

If a madman committed polytheism (shirk) before his madness and did not repent of it, he will be held accountable for it. As for his other actions, his accountability for them is subject to the will of Allah. His afflictions, including madness, may serve as expiation for his sins.
