Should I continue trying to communicate with my aunt and ignore her abuse of my mother?
"Maintaining kinship ties is obligatory. A true maintainer of kinship is not one who merely reciprocates connection, but rather one who connects with those who have cut him off. Your action towards your estranged paternal aunt truly embodies the kinship praised by Islamic law. Even if she shuns you or turns away from you, continue to maintain ties with her and do not cut her off, unless maintaining ties with her causes you harm and abuse, such as insults and revilement. In such a case, merely greeting her with 'peace' would suffice to avoid the forbidden abandonment. If your paternal aunt only cuts off your mother, then speak with her and try to reconcile between her and your mother. You are permitted to lie for the sake of reconciling disputes between people."
