What is the ruling on a girl going daily with the university driver alone?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Many scholars have issued fatwas prohibiting a woman from going out alone with a foreign (non-mahram) driver, as this is considered unlawful khalwa (private seclusion). They cite the Prophet's (peace be upon him) sayings: "No man is to be alone with a woman unless she has a mahram with her," and "Beware! No man is alone with a woman but the third of them is Satan." This is the preponderant opinion due to the corrupting consequences that result from such khalwa. The argument that it is not khalwa as long as it is within the city or in front of people's eyes is weak, because the dangers between the two are present inside the car. Therefore, it is necessary to find a way to eliminate the khalwa, such as the presence of a mahram or female colleagues. As for a woman going out alone with a foreign driver, it is not permissible.
