Do scholars today know the reason for the revelation of every verse of the Qur’an and its interpretation as narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him? And why do they strive in interpretation instead of relying on the explanation of the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, who clarified the meanings of the Qur’an to the Companions, as stated in His saying, the Almighty: "And We have sent down to you the Dhikr (the Reminder) that you may make clear to the people what has been sent down to them"?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, clarified to his companions what needed clarification from the Book of Allah, such as the general rulings. He did not interpret every verse or word, because the Companions understood these things by their natural disposition. What has been narrated concerning the reasons for revelation is limited, and not every verse has a reason for its revelation. Scholars have authored books on the Prophet’s, peace and blessings be upon him, interpretation and clarification of the verses, among them al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, and al-Suyuti. The exegetes differed in their interpretation of some verses due to the unreliability or contradiction of the narrations concerning them, or because they did not find any authentic reports regarding them.
