Is the surcharge imposed on those who are late in paying their telecommunications bills, as a penalty for each day of delay, considered unlawful (haram), and does working for such a company become unlawful (haram), thereby necessitating the search for another job?

The late payment fine imposed by the company for delayed debt repayment is Islamically forbidden (haram) because it is usury (riba). The Holy Qur'an has prohibited it, as Allah Almighty says: "O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers." (Quran 2:278). As for working at the company, there is no impediment to it if the work is not related to collecting or writing usury, such as technical work.
