Any act that leads to the mother's displeasure and sorrow is considered an act of disobedience (Uquq) that is forbidden by شرع (Islamic law), and its perpetrator incurs sin. The sin is lifted if she forgives him and he repents with sincere repentance. The Hadith "The Lord's pleasure is in the parents' pleasure, and the Lord's displeasure is in the parents' displeasure" indicates the gravity of this matter. The prohibition of harming her with words is indicated by Allah's saying: {So do not say to them [even] 'uff' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.}
