What is the ruling on the prayer of someone who wiped over his socks for three days as a resident, having forgotten a previous fatwa permitting wiping for only one day and one night, and must he repeat the prayers?

What has been mentioned, that a resident can wipe once or for three days, is incorrect. Rather, the correct ruling is that the duration for wiping is one day and one night for a resident, and three days and nights for a traveler. This is the view of the majority. The Maliki madhhab, which does not differentiate between a traveler and a resident and sets no limit for the duration, is weak. Therefore, the questioner must make up the prayers he performed with an invalid wiping, because forgetfulness is not an excuse for ritual impurity. If he does not know their number, he should make up what he believes is sufficient to clear his conscience.
