Is it permissible for the husband to prevent his wife from observing a supererogatory fast while there is a dispute and estrangement between them?

It is not permissible for a woman to observe a voluntary fast while her husband is present unless with his permission; this is based on the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "It is not lawful for a woman to fast while her husband is present except with his permission." One of the objectives of Islamic law is to achieve harmony and affection between spouses, and this is not consistent with a woman fasting voluntarily without her husband's permission. It is recommended to strive to resolve disputes between spouses, and a loving, fertile woman who seeks her husband's رضا (satisfaction) is considered among the people of Paradise.
