Scholars have differed regarding the number of rak'ahs for the regular supererogatory ( Ratibah) prayers. Others are of the opinion that they are twelve rak'ahs, based on the hadith of 'Aishah and Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with both of them), which is the more preponderant opinion. The four rak'ahs before Dhuhr are preferred, though two rak'ahs are also good. As for the two rak'ahs after Jumu'ah prayer, they are not among the daily regular supererogatory prayers. The general principle for supererogatory (Nawafil) prayers is that they should be performed individually, but it is permissible to perform them in congregation occasionally without making it a habit. It is not understood from the hadith of 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the two rak'ahs of the 'Isha' supererogatory prayer can be combined with al-Layl with a single intention.
