Is it permissible to sever ties of kinship with someone who does not fear God in many matters?

The Ummah has agreed on the obligation of maintaining kinship ties, based on His (Allah's) saying: (And fear Allah, through Whom you ask one another, and the wombs (kinship ties)). This right is further emphasized by the obligation to maintain ties with disbelieving relatives, so it is even more imperative to maintain ties with a Muslim who is a transgressor. This is indicated by the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The one who maintains ties is not the one who reciprocates, but the one who maintains ties is he who, when his relatives sever ties with him, connects with them." However, boycotting is not forbidden if it deters the transgressor from his transgression and encourages him to obedience. This applies when the boycott is for a legitimate Sharia reason, such as an innovation or transgression, and not for personal desires. The Prophet's (peace be upon him) boycott of Ka'b ibn Malik and his two companions is understood in this context.
