What is the minimum distance for travel that permits breaking the fast?

The majority of scholars hold that the distance over which one may shorten prayers (qasr) and break the fast (iftar (definition)) is 48 miles, equivalent to approximately 80 kilometers. Some scholars are of the view that travel is not defined by a specific distance but by common practice (urf); thus, whatever people consider to be travel, it is indeed travel, and the rulings pertaining to travel, such as shortening prayers and breaking the fast, apply to it. Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah and Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen preferred this latter opinion.
