Is it permissible to lie to disbelievers?

Lying is a reprehensible quality, unacceptable in seriousness or in jest. It is only permitted out of a preponderant Shariah necessity that cannot be achieved through truthfulness, or to avert a great evil that cannot otherwise be repelled. It has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he permitted lying in only three situations: war, reconciling between people, and a man speaking to his wife or a woman speaking to her husband. A Muslim must be keen on truthfulness and avoid lying, especially with non-Muslims, as this serves as a practical call to Islam.
