Is it permissible to wipe over wool or cotton socks for more than one day and night, and to follow the view of the Malikis that there is no limit to the wiping?

Scholars have differed on the permissibility of wiping over socks (جوربين). Most of them stipulated that the sock must cover the foot and be thick. Some allowed wiping over thin socks, but the issue is one of ijtihad (independent reasoning), and there is no harm in following a scholar on it. As for the duration of wiping, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, specified it as one day and one night for the resident and three days and their nights for the traveler: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, made [the duration] three days and their nights for the traveler, and one day and one night for the resident." This text must be acted upon, and it is not permissible to follow anyone who contradicts it. The hadith that permits wiping for more than one day and one night for the resident is weak. Therefore, one must limit it to one day and one night for the resident. Previous limited prayers should be made up as a precaution, while unlimited ones do not require making up.
