The correct doctrine is what the predecessors of the Ummah, the Companions, the Tabi'in, and their followers in goodness, were upon, because they were on the straight guidance. The methodology of the Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jama'ah has settled on refraining from discussing what transpired between the Companions and being pleased with all of them, believing that what occurred between them was due to ijtihad (independent reasoning), for which the one who is correct receives two rewards and the one who errs receives one reward, and that their sins are forgiven alongside their virtues. They know that much of what has been narrated concerning this tribulation is incorrect, and that in what is correct among it, they are excused or rewarded.
