What is the ruling on the discharge of a small amount of clear liquid that does not possess the characteristics of vaginal secretions, after performing istinja' (ritual cleansing after defecation or urination) and ensuring drying and pressure? Discharges from a woman's private parts are pure if they exit from the birth canal, and impure if they exit from the urinary tract. The default assumption when in doubt is that they exit from the birth canal. They invalidate ablution in all cases. If they cease, one must wait for them to stop, then perform ablution and pray. If they are impure, one must clean oneself (istinja (definition)') from them and purify any affected body parts and clothing, then perform ablution and pray. However, if it is highly probable that they will not stop, or that the time they stop is insufficient for purification and prayer, then they fall under the ruling of one afflicted with incontinence (sahib al-salas). In this case, she should perform ablution after the entry of the prayer time and pray the obligatory prayer and as many supererogatory prayers as she wishes until that time expires.
