What is the polite way for a student of knowledge to ask questions to scholars?

A student of knowledge should observe general and specific manners when interacting with his teacher. Among these are what Al-Ghazali transmitted from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): that he should not overwhelm him with questions, nor distress him in his answer, nor insist on him if he is weary, nor reveal his secret, nor backbite anyone in his presence. He should honor and magnify him as long as he upholds the command of Allah.

This does not mean accepting everything the teacher says if it contradicts the truth. Rather, he should refute him respectfully, for a student's disagreement with his teacher on some issues has a valid basis and evidence, while maintaining reverence and veneration.

Among the manners of a student are: not to be arrogant towards knowledge or authoritarian towards his teacher, to submit to his advice, and to be humble, attentive, and present of heart.

The question must be good and clear, with the intention of learning, not disputation or argumentation. He should abandon custom if it contradicts the command of Allah Almighty.
