If a secret marriage is a private agreement only between a man and a woman, it is considered zina (fornication/adultery) and is impermissible. However, if the marriage (nikah) fulfills all its conditions and pillars, and is simply not announced to some people, it is valid and permissible according to the majority of scholars. If the family prevents the marriage, their obedience is not obligatory, and it is permissible to marry secretly with the presence of the woman's wali (guardian) and witnesses, and the fulfillment of the remaining pillars and conditions.
