Is it permissible in Islam to use lawful cunning and astuteness to achieve a permissible goal, such as gaining the favor of an official through gifts, with a sincere intention to overcome competitors?

If the competition is solely to win someone's affection and love, then it is permissible and even desirable in Islam, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Give gifts, and you will love each other." However, if the person is a supervisor at work, the gift might raise suspicions of seeking favoritism, even if the giver does not intend that. But if the gift is intended for favoritism, then it is outright bribery, and "the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed the one who gives bribes and the one who takes them."
