How can I love God and His Messenger, and how can I differentiate between my love for God and His Messenger, and which of them should be loved more?
A Muslim must love Allah and His Messenger together, and Allah must be dearer to him than all other creation, including His Messenger, because equating the Creator and the created in love is polytheism. Allah Almighty said: "And among the people are those who take rivals to Allah, loving them as they should love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah."
Similarly, the Messenger must be dearer to him than all other creation, including himself. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "None of you will have faith until I am more beloved to him than his child, his father, and all of mankind."
The difference between loving Allah and loving His Messenger is that the love of Allah is a love of worship, humility, and submission, whereas the love of the Messenger is a love that follows the love of Allah and is for the sake of Allah, not a love alongside Allah. For love alongside Allah is polytheism.
