Is it permissible to watch anime series and read novels that depict mixing between genders and friendships between males and females, if the story is not fundamentally based on this mixing and friendship?

It is forbidden to watch TV series that contain elements contrary to Islamic law. Contemporary scholars have differed on the ruling regarding watching TV series free of forbidden content; some forbid it absolutely, while others permit it on condition that it is free from religious prohibitions, such as corruption and bad morals. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) was of the opinion that it is permissible if it does not contain anything forbidden. The preponderant opinion is that it is permissible if it is free from corruption, but if it includes illicit mixing (of sexes) and forbidden relationships, then it is not permissible to watch it due to its negative effects on behavior and morals, especially on children, bearing in mind that a Muslim's time is precious and should be spent on what benefits him.
