Is it necessary to remove the dirt accumulated at the front of the nose from the inside before ablution, or is sniffing water up the nose (istinshāq) and expelling it (istinthār) sufficient?

Scholars have differed regarding whether the inner part of the nose is considered part of the face. Some have made washing it obligatory during ablution, while others have not, due to it not being considered part of the face, and this is the well-known opinion within the Maliki school. Istinshaq (sniffing water into the nose) is the act of drawing water with one's breath to the back of the nose for cleansing, and it should be done thoroughly for those who are not fasting. The evidence for its legality is the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: "And be thorough in sniffing water into your nose, unless you are fasting." It is recommended to clean it by inserting a finger to remove mucus, and the ablution of one who has not removed traces of mucus or dirt is valid according to the most preponderant opinion.
