What is the ruling on claiming Christianity in order to obtain residency papers, and is the one who does so considered an apostate?

A Muslim's claim to belong to a religion other than Islam is a serious matter. Some scholars have stipulated that whoever makes such a claim, without being under oath, has apostatized, even if he was jesting. There is no necessity that would call for such a claim unless the Muslim fears for his life; in that case, he does not disbelieve if his heart is firm in faith. One must repent to Allah Almighty and not return to such an act, and be keen on preserving one's religion, staying connected with Muslims, and attending gatherings of knowledge.
