The question

Is zakat obligatory on money and gold that the mother disposed of to manage the affairs of the children after the father's death, even though zakat had not been paid on them for five years? And is it permissible for the children to pay zakat on behalf of their mother while she is still alive?

The answer

Zakat must be given if the wealth reaches the nisab, which is equivalent to 85 grams of pure gold or 595 grams of pure silver, and a full Hijri year has passed on it. Whoever was obligated to pay Zakat and did not do so, must repent to Allah and hasten to pay it for the past years. They can find out how to calculate it from previous fatwas. The mother is not required to pay Zakat from her own money instead of her son's money. However, he may donate the amount of Zakat to her, provided that she informs him of this, so that he intends to pay the obligatory Zakat, as Zakat is not valid without intention.
