Does divorce take effect, or is it permissible to divorce a wife after consummating the marriage with her and before she goes to her family in the desert?

Divorce does not occur by mere intention or promise. It is not permissible for a husband to divorce his wife when she is in a state of purity during which he had intercourse with her, or while she is menstruating, because that is an innovative (bid'i) and prohibited divorce. Furthermore, divorce is disliked if it is without need.
