Is a working son obligated to financially support his parents who are well-off?

Scholars unanimously agree on the obligation to provide for needy parents who have no earnings or wealth. The majority view is that if the parents are not in need, they are only entitled to what suffices their needs from their son's wealth, citing hadiths that prohibit taking a Muslim's property without his willing consent, and that everyone is more entitled to their own earnings. The Hanbalis, however, believe that parents have a right to their son's wealth whether they are in need or not, provided it does not cause hardship to the son, citing the hadith (definition): "You and your wealth belong to your father." The preponderant view is that of the majority, but it is commendable for the son to give them from his wealth what pleases them, as their contentment is a reason for Allah's contentment.
