What is the ruling on listening to anasheeds (Islamic hymns) that were originally songs whose lyrics were changed while the melody and music remained?
It is forbidden to use and listen to musical instruments, except for the drum (daff) for women during Eids and celebrations, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "There will be among my Ummah people who will legalize illegal sexual intercourse, silk, alcoholic drinks, and musical instruments." A group of scholars has narrated a consensus on the prohibition of listening to musical instruments.
Therefore, if anashid (religious songs) contain musical accompaniment, they are forbidden. However, if they are free of music, there is no objection to them, provided they do not include other forbidden elements, such as words inciting vice, or a woman singing to non- men, and provided that they do not become one's constant habit.
